From size, to thickness, surface material and elasticity; there are a surprising number of factors that can affect the performance of a gaming mouse pad. Some of them are pretty straightforward, while others vary and can be based more on preference. For example, a large mouse pad is usually better as long as the desk or table you’re gaming on has a big enough surface to support it. On the other hand, how much glide or resistance the mouse pad has is more subjective.

Read on and we’ll help you decide which gaming mouse pad is best for you.

Best Gaming Mouse Pads

So what are the best gaming mouse pads? We researched this obsessively and came up with some timeless classics, as well as some newer mouse pads with some interesting features.

Let’s break it down:

Corsair MM300 - Extended X Large

Corsair MM300 – Extended X Large

The Corsair MM300 is a versatile mousepad with a variety of different sizes and styles. This gaming keyboard comes in these sizes:

Although the Corsair gaming mouse comes in many different sizes, we are focusing on the Extended X Large. The style of the mouse pad is awesome, and pairs really well with the Corsair K55 keyboard.

Before you purchase an extended gaming mouse pad we highly recommend measuring your desk and to see if you have enough space. The first time I purchased an extended gaming mouse pad I did not have enough desk space so I ended up buying a new desk. This was arguably one of the best decisions I’ve made.

The precision, control, and quick snaps I was able to get in Overwatch was incredible. If you’re a hard core FPS gamer that plays competitively then this is highly recommended. If you only use your wrist to aim then this mouse isn’t for you. It’s time to train to use your whole hand and build your muscle memory as that’s where you will get the most value from the mouse. Even if you’re not going to use the whole mouse pad or don’t have enough desk space, you will still be able to put your mouse and keyboard on it.

Pros
  • Fits both mouse and keyboard, protecting your desk from getting scuffed
Cons
  • More desk space needed

The tracking on the QcK gaming mouse pad is absolutely phenomenal. It is a very low-friction surface, enabling maximum glide for quick snap shots in FPS? or skillshots in MOBAs. This is a very popular mousepad amongst CS:GO gamers, widely considered to be the best cs go mousepad.

CORSAIR MM250 Champions Series

The Corsair MM250 Champions Series is a thick mouse pad perfect for smoothing out rough or uneven surfaces. It is sufficiently large at 450mm x 400mm (17.7 by 15.7 inches). The surface is high-glide and wear-resistant, to allow for long-term use with high-performance gaming mice. It also has a textured rubber base to grip the desk and prevent slipping.

Thin mouse pads aren’t for everyone and they don’t necessarily fit the play style for many. This is where the Corsair MM250 Champion Series wins. The gaming mouse pad has 5mm plush rubber. This gaming mouse pad has a great size and surface for those who don’t want an extended mouse pad but still want to game with low sensitivity.

Pros
  • Flexible
  • Durable
Cons
  • Doesn’t make the most of large desks

Razer Firefly Hard V2 RGB Gaming Mouse Pad

Razer Firefly Hard V2 RGB Gaming Mouse Pad

The first thing that comes to mind when you see this gaming mouse pad is ?WOW, this looks amazing.? If you love colors and shiny lights then Razer’s RBG gaming mouse, Firefly, is the perfect mouse for you. The Razer Firefly supports over 16.8 million colors, has a micro-textured surface, 3 millimeter thin, 19 lighting zones, and comes with a built in cable catch for those gamers that don’t want to use a wireless gaming mouse. Our first impression was that the RGB lights on the gaming mouse will make it too thick and hard to use. Boy were we wrong? It’s surprisingly thin and feels extremely comfortable!

It comes in the following versions:

VersionSupported StyleMain Difference
Firefly v1Cloth, HardOriginal version, cheaper
Firefly v2HardThinner, more RGB zones, brighter lights

One of the biggest disadvantages of the Razer Firefly is that the gaming mouse pad costs as much if not more than most gaming mouses. Overall, the Razer Firefly provides the perfect balance for those looking for style, comfort, and quality. We definitely think the Razer Firefly is the best RGB mouse pad there is out there, and you should definitely buy it if you want to show it off to your non-gamer friends.

Pros
  • Supports 16.8 million colors
  • Cable Catch
  • Antislip

Hyper FuryX Fury S Speed Edition Gaming Mouse Pad

Hyper FuryX Fury S Speed Edition Gaming Mouse Pad

The HyperX Fury S Speed Edition is a great gaming mouse pad that is affordable for XL mouse pads. Regardless of whether you favor speed or accuracy, the thickly woven texture gives a surface that feels smooth when gaming. Like most rubber mouse pads, when you first take out the gaming mousepad out of the box you typically get a rubber/chemical like smell. This can be off putting for a lot of people that are sensitive to smell. From a performance standpoint, the HyperX Fury does the job. Anyone who purchases the HyperX Fury won’t be disappointed as its overall a great gaming mouse pad for the price.

The HyperX Fury S is offered in the following variations:

Corsair MM800 Polaris RGB Mouse Pad

Corsair MM800 Polaris RGB Mouse Pad

The Corsair MM800 Polaris RGB mouse pad has 15 RGB zones  to light the mouse pad out. The packaging and unboxing experience was incredible, but since we’re looking for the best gaming mouse then that’s not really a criteria to focus on. However, we definitely do appreciate the effort Corsair has put.

Similar to the Razor Firefly, the first thought that comes to mind when you use the mouse pad is its gorgeous style. Another advantageous perk that the Corsair MM800 comes with is the built in USB port that can free up a lot of mouse cable space if you decide to plug in a mouse there. There’s other uses of the USB port such as charging your iPhone or Android phone.

Overall if you’re a big fan of Corsair, love lights, want extra features like a built in USB, and still have a great gaming mouse pad then this may be a great option for you. There’s no reason you will ever be disappointed if you purchase the Corsair MM800 mousepad.

Roccat Taito Control

Roccat Taito Control

The Roccat Taito Control is cost-effective, thin, and made of high-quality materials. For the price, this is by far one of the best gaming mouses on the market. If you’re a hardcore gamer who hates that ‘silky smooth” feel when playing games then a mouse that’s a bit more rugged may be a great option for you. This mouse pad was designed with control in mind which means it’s perfect for keeping your crosshair locked onto its target.

Overall this is a great affordable mouse pad for those looking for an alternative to ?fast? mouse pads.. The rugged feel to it is both a pro and a con depending on what you’re looking for.

Specifications

  • Stitched border prevents fraying
  • Dimensions: 400 x 320 x 3.5mm
Pros
  • Great Control
  • Durable
  • Affordable
Cons
  • Control comes at the expense of speed

Razer Goliathus Extended Chroma Gaming Mousepad

Razer Goliathus Extended Chroma Gaming Mousepad

The Razer Goliathus extended Chroma gaming mouse pad is stylish, long, and made with a finely woven texture.

Compared to the Razer Firefly, the Goliathus is significantly longer and comparable in comfort. If you like extended mouse pads then the Goliathus is a better option. Another reason to choose the Goliathus over the FireFly is if you’re more of a technical person that doesn’t care so much about aesthetics. If aesthetics matters to you, then the Firefly would be the right choice for you.

The reason we ranked the Goliathus lower than the Firefly is because the software worked noticeably better with the Firefly and to us, that’s a deal-breaker for long term gaming. At the same time, the Goliathus is a lot cheaper than the Firefly and there’s probably a reason for that knowing Razer. Razer typically charges a premium for their gear.

One of the biggest pitfalls of this extended RGB gaming mouse pad is that it struggles to stay flat. Many recommend online to lay the mouse pad flat for at least 24 hours after unboxing it. This will give time for some of the elasticity to fade and the mousepad will flatten. If it doesn’t, putting a weight on it during this time will help reinforce the proper flat shape.

Specifications

  • Razer Chroma Software
    • Personalize & customize RGB lighting
    • Calibrate gaming mice
    • Sync with popular games
  • Micro-texture cloth surface
  • Mouse cable management
Pros
  • 16.8 million customizable colors
  • Razer Synapse software features
Cons
  • Struggles to stay flat

CORSAIR MM600 Dual Sided Aluminum Gaming Mouse Pad

CORSAIR MM600 Dual Sided Aluminum Gaming Mouse Pad

Do you want an alternative to cloth gaming mouse pads? Then the Corsair MM600 aluminum gaming mouse pad is a great choice to consider. The first thing you’ll notice when using the Corsair MM600 is how easily it glides through the surface, it’s like no other feeling out there and the tracking is phenomenal. One of the biggest concerns of aluminum mouse pads is that they can be hard to keep positioned as you game. However, this aluminum gaming mouse pad does not slip or move around while you’re intensely gaming.

If you’re a hard core gamer and typically tear through your cloth mouse pads then this aluminum mouse pad may be a great alternative providing more long term durability. One of the biggest disadvantages for us is that it was a little too small for FPS gaming especially when it glides so fast, but that’s why it’s double sided. If you don’t want it to glide too fast, then you can flip the mouse pad over and have more precision. If you’re a MOBA player then this is a great choice. Overall, the MM600 aluminum mouse pad is a great purchase if you’re looking for an alternative to cloth mouse pads.

Why do you need a gaming mouse pad?

Gaming mouse pads are made with materials that ensure proper tracking from optical and laser mice. Regular mouse pads are also typically much smaller than gaming mouse pads. This can result in not having enough space to fully maneuver the mouse, especially because a lot of serious gamers prefer to play with low sensitivity. Having a larger surface area allows the gamer to make larger mouse strokes to produce more complete signals to be interpreted by the computer’s drivers and video game engine. In short, you have more control of your aim when you don’t have to lift your mouse up.

What to look for in a gaming mouse pad?

There are a number of factors to look for in a gaming mouse pad including thickness, size, and material. Let’s break it down:

Thickness
The main consideration with thickness is the texture of the surface under the gaming mouse pad. If it is a rough or more uneven surface, having a thick mousepad will help to smooth things out for your mouse a bit when you’re gaming. If you have a smooth, dense surface like a polymer desk then having a thick mouse pad may be unnecessary, and a thin mouse pad may be more versatile.

Size
Generally, you want a large mouse pad. A big mouse pad simply means more area to work with while gaming. The only consideration is whether your desk can support it’s size. For example, the Corsair MM300 – Extended X Large and the SteelSeries QcK Mouse Pad XL RGB Prism Cloth are both full desk mouse pads at nearly 3 feet wide.

Material
The material of your gaming mouse pad is important for a number of reasons. First and foremost is to use a micro-textured material optimized for tracking. This ensures that your optical or laser sensor on your gaming mouse is perfectly precise, making the most of your gaming mouse DPI. You also want to pick a mouse pad with the right amount of friction to help the movements you make with your gaming mouse. This will work alongside your muscle memory so that you can make those quick snap shots in FPS games.
